Welcome to SCA 101. This section was designed by the Shire of Crescent Moon to be a starting point for anyone who is interested in our Shire, but do not know much about it. Although this is a good place to start, this is by no means a replacement for the official SCA site. This is strictly meant to be a supplement for our local shire. We can not suggest strongly enough that you please check out the SCA home page for official information.
What is the SCA?
Have you ever wanted to be a knight in
shining armor? Or a lovely damsel in a royal court? You know you have. Every kid has had dreams like this at one time or another.
What we do in the SCA is we actually live those dreams. On the weekends, we travel back in time. We put on period clothing, and live as if we were back in the middle ages.
Our purpose is to study and recreate what we have learned of the Europeon Middle Ages (600 - 1600 AD).
The difference between what we do and what you do in school, is we do what we research. Instead of just reading how to make ale, we take the next step and actually make it and drink it. Instead of reading how to forge armor, we actually make the armor and wear it. Everything is put into a personal perspective of “How would they of done that?”
Probably the most popular and visible aspects of the SCA is the heavy combat. Both men and women clad in armor, take the field of battle and fight each other in tournaments and melee situations. Most of the armor worn on the field was made by the person wearing it. There are many different styles of armor as there are cultures in the world. It is the responsibility of the person making the armor not only to make it accurate, but to make it safe for today’s standards.
Besides combat, there are many, many different things a person can do in the SCA. The hard part is trying to do everything you want to do. If you can’t find anything interesting to do in the SCA, you are not trying hard enough.
